12 Minutes of Dying Light Gameplay

We’ve been dying (sorry) to see Dying Light in action since its initial E3 reveal and Techland have finally unleashed some gameplay footage. This survival action game takes the Dead Island template and adds in some slick parkour moves to spice up the action.

It’s about time developers started to take some influence from the criminally under-appreciated Mirror’s Edge and we have our fingers crossed this will be more fun to play than Brink. Gameplay here looks to be very open, with tough choices needing to be made on the fly, as shown when discovering a lone survivor on the way to a supply drop.

You’ll also get a brief look at how much of a bad idea it is to be caught outside after dark in Dying Light. We’ll presume the almost instant transition to night-time was sped up a little for display purposes in this mission, but it would appear direct combat is a big no no at night. The zombies appear to go through some sort of transformation, becoming faster, stronger and more agile requiring intense sneaking around or terrifying sprints when discovered. Consider this one back on our radars. Enjoy the video after the break. Continue reading 12 Minutes of Dying Light Gameplay

Beyond: Two Souls Video Discusses Gameplay

Part two of Quantic Dream’s series of dev diaries tells us about about the gameplay design choices for Beyond: Two Souls. The simplicity of of the user-interface and allowing non-gamers to get involved seems to be a theme throughout. We also get to see lots of different environments including wintry snowstorms, deserts and warzones.

The game will play out over 15 years of Jodie’s life, so we’ll see her as a child, bratty goth teen, a homeless person and as an adult. If you missed part one of the series, you can see it below the new video after the break. Continue reading Beyond: Two Souls Video Discusses Gameplay

Deadpool (Review)

The spandex-sporting shooty, slicy, shouty scamp

The superhero barrel gets another scraping for yet another video game tie-in. This time, for Marvel’s Merc With a Mouth, Deadpool. The dude hasn’t even had a movie yet. But hey, that might work in his favour.

Newcomers to Deadpool’s universe should know that he’s known as a character that frequently breaks the fourth wall in comics. Essentially, he knows he’s a comic book character even though everyone else in the Marvel Universe has no idea. This allows him to constantly talk to the readers and share jokes with them, often at the bewilderment of the likes of Wolverine who can’t fathom why he’s so laid-back all the time (he’s already skimmed through the script of this game for example). Everybody’s Golf Returns to PS3. Next Week!

Tired of putting up with tired Tiger Woods updates every year? We’d thoroughly recommend ordering your caddy to get over to PSN on July 24th to pick up Everybody’s Golf then.

Sony are being a little bit sneaky as this is actually a PS3 version of the Vita launch game. On the plus side, that was a great game, which I awarded 8/10 in early 2012. The game is going to sell at £11.99 which, given the huge amount of content, is a solid deal.

Owners of the Vita game will be able to port across their save file too along with any DLC they picked up along the way. Also, Vita and PS3 players will be able to play online together. The PS3 version does get a new feature in the form of PS Move compatibility. I’m not sure how well that will turn out as EA and Tiger haven’t nailed motion control yet, John Daly also failed, and most players use the old-school ‘three-click’ method to gauge swing power anyway.

For our American readers, the game will launch a day earlier for $19.99 under the title, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational. Have a launch trailer after the break. Continue reading Everybody’s Golf Returns to PS3. Next Week!

Strength of the Sword 3 (Review)

Remember those bits in Demon’s Souls when you finally overcame a tough stage or defeated a boss that had been smashing your broken body into the ground every time you scrambled through hell on earth just to get to him? Felt good, yes? Well, it’s a good thing you probably still have plenty to do in Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, because despite Strength of the Sword 3 proudly wearing its tough difficulty badge with honour, it’s amateur hour when it steps into the arena with its rivals.

I like to think I have a fairly sound knowledge of games released in the last ten years, so it was with a mild sense of shame I accepted the task of reviewing part three of a series I’d never heard of. After my first hour with the game though, I was convinced something was amiss. How the hell had this monster managed to escape from a dev kit beforehand? Had it always been like this?

LoveFilm Existing Game Subscribers Clarification

Earlier this week LoveFilm sadly announced that they would not be letting new or existing customers sign up to any game rental packages on the site. However, it wasn’t particularly clear what would be happening if a customer already had a games rental package.

As many of our readers -and indeed our staff-  enjoy LoveFilm’s game rental services, we reached out for answers and received this reply: Continue reading LoveFilm Existing Game Subscribers Clarification

Have 10 Minutes of Fresh Saints Row IV Footage

Couldn’t make it to E3? Fear not, we’ve got the video that was shown behind closed doors in LA. It begins by showing you as the President of the United States in your first encounter with the alien forces at the white house, including the use of a massive cannon in the garden. Later on, you get to see more action out on the streets. They really have ramped up the crazy to 11.

Looking at all the over-the-top action and sci-fi enhancements that you can add to give you super-human powers, it couldn’t have distanced itself from GTA and further. This is a good thing though and we can’t wait to play the game at the end of August. Check out the video after the break and have a read of Matt’s hands-on preview too. The Last of Us is Big in Japan

Despite its CERO Z rating, which is higher than an M rating in Japan, The Last of Us has manged to exceed its sales expectations. In fact, 88% of the initial shipment has flown off the shelves, with 117,465 copies sold in its first week. Outstanding work for a new IP, even more so given the traditionally off-putting age rating. The Last of Us Patch Removes Sexy Phone Numbers

Patch Includes Multiplayer Fixes

Well, the Naughty Dog studio have been caught with their pants down here. One of the phone numbers posted on an in-game bulletin board in The Last of Us for a pest exterminator is actually a real phone number, for a sex line. Not the Easter egg gamers were after upon spotting the phone number.

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann explained how this happened, “What happened was, they put some phone numbers in the game and then they thought they could just change the area code to 555, then it’s invalid because it’s what they do in movies. But I guess that doesn’t work when you have a 1-800 in front of it.” Continue reading The Last of Us Patch Removes Sexy Phone Numbers

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Gets 5 Minute E3 Trailer

It’s hard to believe after all these years we’re only a few months away from getting an online Final Fantasy game on the PS3. The latest trailer from E3 does its best to show off the gorgeous environments, cutscenes and in-game action. With Final Fantasy XV seemingly taking a new gameplay direction, this may be the best bet for RPG fans. Provided you have the coin that is.

With monthly subs starting around the £8/$14 mark we’re still a little on the fence about this one. On the fence, but damn near falling off it as we lean in for a better look that is. A Realm Reborn is out August 27th on PC and PS3, check out the new trailer after the break. Continue reading Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Gets 5 Minute E3 Trailer

Battlefield 3 and Saints Row 3 Coming to PS Plus in July

This, this is getting ridiculous! How are we meant to play all of these games? Well, let’s give it a go anyway. From July 3rd, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download a fresh batch of free titles. This time we’re getting EA’s classic FPS, Battlefield 3 and the wonderfully fun Saints Row: The Third. Online bank-heist shooter Payday: The Heist will also be available to whet your appetite for the upcoming sequel.

Vita owners can look forward to more awkward memory card management as they try and fit in the third-person military shooter Unit 13 and the slice and dice action of Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus. Isn’t it about time Sony released some decent sized memory cards over here and made them cheaper too? Continue reading Battlefield 3 and Saints Row 3 Coming to PS Plus in July

Gameplay Shown in New Batman: Arkham Origins Trailer

A new trailer featuring gameplay scenes was debuted in the early hours this morning at Sony’s E3 presser. We get to see Bats enjoy his trademark brawling and play with some new toys. Our favourite has to be the double grappling hook that tethers two enemies together and knocks them out by slamming them into each other.

Some new cutscene material also shows us a few enemies who are all out for the reward money provided by Black Mask for killing the Dark Knight. Bane, Deadshot, Deathstroke and even the Joker make an appearance, making us glad we’re getting a prequel. A third Arkham game just wouldn’t be the same without the lovable loon. Enjoy the trailer after the break.

Fuse (Review)

Insomniac’s first outing since leaving Sony’s nest was always going to be a tough task. But with such a strong history of inventive weaponry in the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance games, chances were that anything they put their minds too involving boomsticks would be fun.

Fuse is a third-person cover shooter with a heavy emphasis on co-op. With the multiplatform competition consisting of the like of Kane & Lynch and Army of Two, it’s all there for the taking. Fusepacks a little extra punch by allowing for four-player co-op action, rather than a paltry two.

Underwater Stage and Riley the COD Dog Gameplay Debuted for Call of Duty: Ghosts

The live gameplay reveal for Call of Duty: Ghosts has just been shown giving gamers an early look at what the press are going to see at E3 in a few days’ time.

The demo begins with an underwater section that resembles many of the stealthy follow missions in previous Call of Duty games. You follow your AI partner around some highly detailed reefs, populated by schools of fish and apparently not-that-hungry sharks. The demo was running on ‘next-gen hardware’ but some of the finer detail was lost due to the live stream nature of the feed. We’re sure a shiny HD version of the demo will emerge over the next few days though.

After another bit of stage chatter, we finally get to see the COD Dog in action, or should I say, Riley. Infinity Ward have named the canine after his namesake in a few previous Call of Duty titles. I know, I thought  they were going to go for Price too when they mentioned pleasing fans.

Riley looks awesome though, and we’ll be able to directly control him. This is reasoned-out by him having a pop-up camera mounted on his back and vibrating sensors behind each ear telling him which direction to move in. The German shepherd can be sent to silently dispatch lone targets. Well, silent apart from their terrified screams.

Commands can also be issued, but this may be something the AI takes care of. Upon cracking the glass in a window, the AI partner simply says ‘search’ and Riley smashes through, alarming a group of guards inside before the door suddenly explodes in slow-motion with one enemy soldier flailing to stop Riley eating his face and the others barely even noticing your presence in what appears to be Ghost’s version of a ‘breach’ assault.

The demonstration closes with an impression of the E3 arena’s 120-foot screen showing a montage. Sadly, this looks very thin on your laptop or TV as they try to cram in the whole image.

Just in case you missed the presentation on your Machinima App on your Xbox 360 because it crashed (well worth £30 a year, Microsoft), here’s a link to the replay on the Call of Duty site. Just skip the 30-minute countdown to get to the presentation. We’ll bring you a YouTube link as soon as possible.

It may only be a glimpse, but we’re looking forward to the November 5th release date already.

Wizard and Amazon Trailers For Dragon’s Crown

Here’s the latest batch of character gameplay videos for the upcoming side-scrolling beat em’ up / action RPG hybrid, Dragon’s Crown, for the PS3 and Vita. The Amazon warrior makes the previously-revealed top-heavy Sorceress look like a nun, with an outfit seemingly made of string. Questionable art direction aside, the game is looking like an old-school riot to play. Continue reading Wizard and Amazon Trailers For Dragon’s Crown

Pool Nation (Review)

With only Hustle Kings to really compete with, Pool Nation enters the digital pool hall looking to wipe the floor with the posers. No cutscenes, no irritating voice-overs, just pool. We like it already.

You can dive straight into the lengthy tournament campaigns without bothering with the tutorials if you just want to get stuck in. Basic shots are a breeze. Some very handy aiming lines are turned on by default showing the path of the white ball and a separate path for the ball you’ll hit, making even the sharpest angled shots effortlessly simple.

Three New Tales of Xillia Trailers Released

Namco Bandai have released three new trailers for Tales of Xillia, the Japanese JRPG that is finally coming to Western gamers in August after nearly two years of jealous waiting. The game was met with widespread critical acclaim when released in Japan and even a sequel was released in 2012. Namco will need to see some decent sales of the first game in the West before they consider bringing the second game too.

The new videos show Xillia’s opening sequence and gameplay in the form of character demonstrations for the rather reserved Rowen and the much more feisty Leia. The action-heavy approach the series takes has proved very popular with fans over the years and we enjoyed the recent Tales of Graces F too with Matt awarding 8/10 in his review. You may have also noticed that earlier today we reported that a HD re-release of Tales of Symphonia is coming to PS3. It’s taken a while but JRPG’s seem to finally hitting their stride on the PS3. Enjoy the new videos after the break. Continue reading Three New Tales of Xillia Trailers Released

Tales of Symphonia: Chronicles Coming to PS3

Tales of Symphonia is getting the HD treatment and will be coming to the PS3 in October in Japan and the US and EU in early 2014. The HD re-release will also include Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, a title previously only available on the Wii.

The new title was announced to mild hysteria at the Tales of Festival in Japan, an event that celebrates the many Tales of games seen over the years. Western releases of some of the games in the series has been a bit sporadic, but Tales of Graces F did well last year and the upcoming Tales of Xillia looks set to ride the resurgent wave of JRPGs we’ve been seeing of late.

Check out the announcement trailer after the break for a look at the newly polished cutscenes with a bit of gameplay in-between all the rabid screams of excitement from the crowd. I think their heads might explode if Final Fantasy VII HD ever gets announced. Continue reading Tales of Symphonia: Chronicles Coming to PS3
