Earlier this week we saw the latest PS4 firmware update pop up when we turned on our PS4s. Keen to see what new feature we were getting, we had a look what was included with the new 1.61 update. With the previous update mainly focusing on adding official headset support, we were hoping for something directly targeting the dreaded CE-34878-0 error message which appears on a regular basis for many gamers, either causing corrupted save files or even crashes when browsing their capture collections. Synchronicity Facial Performance Capture Demo Sets New Standards
Fancy a look at the future of graphics for facial performance capture? Then you really need to see this outstanding video which was produced from a collaboration of three teams. Capture, casting, voice recording, writing and direction was handled by Side, 3Lateral took care of head rigging and Cubic Motion was in charge of animating the results.
The three teams decided to produce the demo because they wanted to show off their skills at the cutting edge of what they were capable of today. In an interview with Develop magazine, Side MD Andy Emery said: “We’ve had it, as three outsourcing companies, where we’ve worked on various big projects, but been frustrated in the past by the fact we can’t showcase anything we’ve worked on publicly until a point where everything has moved on.”
Cubic Motion’s Simon Elmes added, “We wanted to create something we could share, and that was completely in our control, where there was no sacrifice made to compression, or many of the other restrictions we sometimes face.”
So without the restrictions of NDA’s or having to produce something for a specific game, the three teams were able to produce this video short which shows a woman recording what looks like a video diary letter home. There’s an impressive range (and more importantly, depth) of emotions on display and unlike many facial tech demos, we’re not just looking at a chatting floating head. Instead, we have a full cinematic cutscene complete with a background and real-time lighting reflecting on the character’s face. Hell, even the shifting material on the t-shirt looks good. Take a look for yourselves and let us know what you think in the comments section. Continue reading Synchronicity Facial Performance Capture Demo Sets New Standards
New Thief Trailer Emphasises Open Approach
Still on the fence about the upcoming Thief game? Then check out this extensive gameplay trailer which does a great job of showing how you’ll be able to play the game in any style you want. Play as a ghost and remain undetected throughout your mission, try to play the game without killing a single person (betting there’s a Trophy for that) or just swagger around firing lethal arrows and stabbing people in the neck -probably making life quite difficult for yourself in the process.
Coming from the team behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution, we’d expect open approaches to missions to make up a large part of the game’s DNA and are enormously relieved to finally see some solid evidence of this. The footage brings to mind a hybrid of Deus Ex, Far Cry 3 and Dishonored, which might just the best thing to happen to stealth gaming since Hideo Kojima looked at a PS1.
Dracula Vs Toy Maker in New Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 Video
We can’t wait for Lords of Shadow 2 here at Dealspwn and it looks like Mercury Steam haven’t run out of ideas for ruddy huge boss fights yet either if this new gameplay video is anything to go by.
This multi-part boss fights sees ol’ pasty face take on a transforming enemy that begins as a lance-wielding knight before going on to become a snake and then a large mechanical puppet-bot. Time to brush on those dodging skills as this could be a tough one. Fingers crossed there are some checkpoints along the way as this isn’t the shortest of battles, but then again, the best ones never are. PS4’s CE-34878-0 Error Code Spreads to Share Captures
Reports have been floating around the net for a few weeks now that numerous PS4 users have seen the CE-34878-0 error code appear and corrupt their save files beyond repair, often wasting up to 40 hours of work for the likes of Assassin’s Creed IV.
However, new evidence suggests the system error isn’t just focussed on our game save files and is spreading throughout the PS4’s other features. Continue reading PS4’s CE-34878-0 Error Code Spreads to Share Captures
Sabrewulf Replaces Jago in Killer Instinct
Since launch on the Xbox One, Jago has been the sole free fighter in Killer Instinct with everyone else available to purchase separately. However, Microsoft has just released a patch to replace him with Sabrewulf so players can try a new character free of charge, which could help lapsed gamers return to the fold.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Guided Tour Trailer
Square-Enix really want you to give Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII a chance. The new trailer for game number three in the XIII series is keen to show you the large numbers of quests available, the expansive maps and the reformatted combat. Oh and chocobos and moogles naturally.
Having had a hands-on with the game, I can say I enjoyed the new combat, which ditches the ‘press X to win’ mentality by assigning individual attacks/spells to the face buttons with more to choose from by changing your schemata (like the dress-sphere’s in FFX-2). And with 80 schemata to choose from -and all of them being customisable- it would seem like we’re finally getting some tactical depth in the series for the first time in years. Old stalwarts may still dismiss the lack of a traditional turn-based approach, but this is an improvement over the last two games, and is slightly turn-based in the sense that you can only dish out a few attacks at once before waiting for a meter to recharge. The Lego Movie Videogame Trailer
While going to the cinema to see the movie will raise some eyebrows unless you have children, buying this is fine. Rock you inner man-child’s world by picking up the latest Lego game in February. The game ties in with the odd looking film which seems to be some sort of crime caper with new characters, but with the likes of Batman and other DC-types popping in to help out every now and then.
To be honest, we’ve no idea what’s going on in this latest trailer, but as Lego City Undercover showed, Traveller’s Tales don’t need to rely on a classic film/comic license to bring us a quality adventure. They know damn well by now we just want to collect shiny things. Speaking of shiny things, why not pick up the PS4/Xbone version of Lego Marvel Super Heroes for £29.99 with our deal. Enjoy the Lego Movie Videogame trailer after the break. Continue reading The Lego Movie Videogame Trailer
Last Chance to Watch Charlie Brooker’s How Video Games Changed the World
I imagine many of our UK readers are familiar with our favourite satirist, Charlie Brooker with his sardonic take on the world that over the years has seen him rip into the worst of television and broadcasting, and write a few screenplays for satirical pieces like his zombie infested take on Big Brother, Dead Set or the ever-strange tales of Black Mirror.
Turns out he’s quite the gamer though, hell he might actually even like them. So much so, he’s put together a show entitled How Video Games Changed the World on Channel 4 to pick out the biggest titles from gaming’s history, we imagine with an idea of educating newbs. Those of you with access to 4 On Demand (or 4od) on your PC or gaming console should act fast, as today is the last day before the show disappears off the service. Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed Connection Proved at Last?
Not long after Ubisoft announced Watch Dogs, rumours and conspiracy theories began to float around that the game was going to be linked to the Assassin’s Creed series, possibly even as a full entry to the series’ canon.
While playing Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag earlier today, I stumbled across some evidence in the Abstergo offices (Ok, less ‘stumbled’ and more ‘hacked’) that directly links the two game brands together. Continue reading Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed Connection Proved at Last?
New Ogre and Stryder Titanfall Rigs Revealed
At last night’s VGX awards (formerly the VGA’s), Titanfall showed up to the party and unveiled two new classes of Titan gamers can look forward to piloting when the game lands in March on the Xbox One, 360 and PC.
Before today, we’d only seen and played as one regular Titan. To mix things up a little on the battlefield we will now have the Ogre and the Stryder to choose from too. The Ogre class is your choice for high damage output and resistance, but at the cost of speed. So it come’s as no surprise that the Stryder model is the opposite, sprinting around the battlefield and using nimble jet-thrust dodge moves to get the upper hand against slower opponents, although this means they will have the weakest armour of the Titans.
See them in action below with a new pair of trailers. Continue reading New Ogre and Stryder Titanfall Rigs Revealed

[UPDATE] Sony Suspends Voucher Redemption to Ease PS4 Server Strain
Bought a PS4 yesterday? Have a little trouble signing into PSN? Us too dear readers. As we expected, the servers strained and buckled under pressure as European gamers tried to sign into PSN on their new PS4’s to download demos, get their free PS Plus games, play online or redeem vouchers. At least the day one firmware patch was available to download without being signed into PSN.
Sony took their time yesterday, but finally acknowledged via Twitter and their Blog that there was an issue, which was something of a relief that it wasn’t something on our end to be honest. Continue reading [UPDATE] Sony Suspends Voucher Redemption to Ease PS4 Server Strain

New International Age Ratings System Launching Worldwide Next Year
During the recent London Games Conference (LGC) it emerged that PEGI are helping to launch the International Age Ratings System Coalition. This new internationally recognised system will see a singular age ratings system being used across key gaming territories such as the UK, USA, South America, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. Talks with Japan and south Korea to join are currently underway.
MCV reports that publishers and developers will only have to fill out a single online form answering pre-determined questions, which will then generate an appropriate age rating for the game. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are reportedly interested already. Continue reading New International Age Ratings System Launching Worldwide Next Year

Xbox One Matches PS4 Day One Sales, But They Shouldn’t Celebrate Yet
Microsoft’s Xbox One has matched the impressive day one numbers of PS4 consoles sold in the first 24 hours since launch. Both machines sold over 1 million machines on day one. Microsoft are currently celebrating their most successful launch yet as the numbers beat those set by the original Xbox and the Xbox 360.
But should they be really be cracking out the champagne? As it turns out, Sony seems to have the upper hand. Microsoft released their console in 13 different territories including, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, UK, and USA. That covers all the largest gaming markets outside of the Far Eastern ones like Japan and China. Continue reading Xbox One Matches PS4 Day One Sales, But They Shouldn’t Celebrate Yet
