Bloodborne’s new loading screens are a godsend
Hunter’s gather! Bloodborne is now even better thanks to today’s 1.03 patch. Despite it being all sunny outside, I was tasked with stapling the curtains shut and checking out the new patch’s performance. A surprisingly large 2.75GB download later and I was able to do just that. What I found not only improved the game, but made failure that little bit easier to bear.
The new loading times are indeed much improved, with most now twice as fast. Before the patch, I’d typically expect a wait of around 40 seconds after death or nipping back to the Hunter’s Dream for fast travel or to spend some Blood Echoes. Today, respawning after death was a brisk 17 seconds and multiple trips back and forth from the hub world were also about 17 seconds. The only time it was any longer was when choosing to fast-travel to a location far away from my last one. Continue reading Bloodborne’s new loading screens are a godsend
PS Vita Version 3 – Third time lucky?
Have you recently heard rumblings a new version of the PS Vita handheld could be in the works? While only a few diagrams have appeared, the validity of which are highly questionable, it got me thinking that maybe a third version of the Vita could be third time lucky for Sony. Here’s how they could turn things around.
Of course, the Vita’s ‘success’ so far is a divisive topic. Gamers expecting a handheld that pumped out AAA titles like Uncharted: Golden Abyss on a regular basis feel understandably short-changed as Sony and third-party developers never really supported the Vita with any true ambition. Why Rocksteady quitting Batman after Arkham Knight is the right choice
Don’t take that title as a slur on Rocksteady’s excellent work on the Arkham series of Batman games, or as an ill-judged prediction that Arkham Knight is going to be anything other than brilliant. Far from it. Batman: Arkham Knight could be the crowning achievement of the trilogy, the realisation of years of hard work and the culmination of efforts and ideas that were finally allowed to exist as gaming hardware caught up to Rocksteady’s lofty ambitions.
So why so keen to see them let the Dark Knight go after June 23rd (well, after the inevitable expansion packs at least)? Rocksteady have proved themselves to be an excellent studio and it would be cruel to tie them to making one franchise over and over again. Let’s see them and Batman go out on a high, before ideas become stale and before the studio becomes fatigued trying to come up with fresh ideas in order to better their own impossibly high bench marks. They’ve been working on Arkham games nonstop since 2007! Continue reading Why Rocksteady quitting Batman after Arkham Knight is the right choice

These 5 fun games will cure your Bloodborne rage
As much as we’re enjoying Bloodborne here at Dealspwn, there comes a time when we need a break. From Software’s game is extremely punishing as you know and it’s good sometimes to step back and play something else for a while to chill out and remember that not every game makes your blood boil or punishes slight slipups by snatching away all your progress from the last hour. So here’s a list of therapeutic games to play when the red mist builds up too much and you fear for your DualShock 4’s safety. Continue reading These 5 fun games will cure your Bloodborne rage
Lego Dimensions: how the magic of Lego could dethrone Skylanders
Lego Dimensions has just been announced, finally confirming the rumours that Warner Bros Interactive were getting in on the toys-to-life genre that has flourished in recent years with the likes of Skylanders, Disney Infinity and more recently, Amiibos.
As adult gamers, we’re often quite cynical about this burgeoning genre, as it often seems like an exploitative cash grab designed to prey upon the pester power of kids on their parents. Or as we’ve seen with the Amiibos, honing in on your most loyal fans with toys that add very little to a gaming experience and even worse, releasing limited numbers of some of them, making fans snap them up even sooner, before the eBay merchants get them all. Worse yet, most of these toys add nothing to a game that couldn’t have just been DLC. Continue reading Lego Dimensions: how the magic of Lego could dethrone Skylanders
Save yourself some time and ignore Square-Enix’s #cantkillprogress Twitch reveal (for now)
Square Enix are currently ‘revealing’ their new game, which we don’t even have a name for, via an interactive broadcast on Twitch. We say interactive (well, they’re saying it), but there is no clue as to how to interact with it.
The video began by showing a man strapped to a chair and being interrogated by someone with an Eastern European voice. The man in the chair was being asked what music he preferred, Folk or Classical. Throughout, voting text appeared on the screen, perhaps to encourage Twitch viewers to vote themselves. Bloodborne makes my blood boil. So why do I play it?
Playing Bloodborne pisses me off. A lot. It makes me want a cigarette despite giving them up over a decade ago. So why has it pulled me in more than any game has in a long time and I’m still playing it every chance I get?
Bloodborne feels like strange new territory to me. Sure I played the original Demon’s Souls and while appreciating what it was trying to do, I just never jelled with it, so I never bothered with Dark Souls either. So what the hell is going on here? Let’s see why on earth I’m doing this to myself. Continue reading Bloodborne makes my blood boil. So why do I play it?
Brendan’s Bloodborne Hangover – A Dark Souls virgin’s first night in Yharnam
As far as Dark Souls goes, you’ll struggle to find anyone at Dealspwn that dislikes it more. But here I am, working my way through Bloodborne. From Software’s latest title is essentially a spiritual successor to the incredibly tough Souls series.
But screw it, I almost enjoyed the Alpha and Beta versions I played in recent months. So perhaps the tides were turning and I was going to start warming to the infamous brand of hardcore gaming that has built up such a large following since the early days of Demon’s Souls. Incidentally, that game was the last one I played. Continue reading Brendan’s Bloodborne Hangover – A Dark Souls virgin’s first night in Yharnam
Battlefield: Hardline Multiplayer Tips
After easing ourselves in though Battlefield: Hardline’s campaign (so much better than the last two games!), we’ve been hitting the servers pretty hard since launch. We’ve been impressed with how stable the online action has been and it looks like Visceral have learned from DICE’s mistakes in Battlefield 4. So you’ve no excuses to not get the most from the online action. However, life as a cop or criminal can be seriously tough out there. So why not improve your chances by checking out our Battlefield: Hardline multiplayer tips. Continue reading Battlefield: Hardline Multiplayer Tips
Paying over £15 for God of War III: Remastered encourages publishers to rip you off
New-gen remasters. They can be great. Or they can be something of a rip-off. We’ve nothing against playing a better looking version of a last-gen game and it’s a great way to invite gamers that may have missed out last time.
But some of these re-releases are really starting to take the piss and are treating gamers like morons, or ripping off those that don’t know any better. We’re always looking at the value for money on offer by looking for the very cheapest game prices for you. So, when we see Sony and retailers trying to charge $40 (or £49.85 in the UK!) for a five year old game with slightly shinier graphics, we struggle to see how they can get away with it. Remember Me – A memory worth saving
Reviewing a game always comes with some degree of time pressure. We can pretend it doesn’t, but it does. Even with no official deadline, it’s sometimes hard to just play a game at your own pace. Bit bored? Tough. Stuck on a boss? No time for a breather – and so on.
I didn’t review Remember Me when it originally came out in 2013, but the game has been sat in my PlayStation + collection for a while now and I finally got around to playing it over the last few weeks. Some days I’d play for twenty minutes, others it would effortlessly pull me in for hours.
Uncharted 4 delay paints a tough Christmas for PS4 this year
So, Uncharted 4 has been pushed back to Spring 2016. As news goes for PS4 gamers, it’s pretty damn heartbreaking. But delays aren’t always a bad thing for a game. We’ve had enough of unfinished releases like AC: Unity and DriveClub, and are trying to be as patient as possible for the likes of Batman: Arkham Knight and The Witcher III, both of which have needed more time before the developers have been ready to unleash them. And major kudos to them for that and as much as it pains me to say it, Kudos to Naughty Dog too.

It’s time developers finally left ‘last-gen’ behind
Last week we learned that the upcoming Mad Max game has had its last-gen platform versions cancelled for the PS3 and Xbox 360. This makes enormous sense to us and we think it’s time developers of full-sized games started to make this their norm. It’s time for them to say goodbye to last-gen and the PS3 and Xbox 360.
We’ve seen too many games suffer during development due to resources being stretched during cross-generational development. To be honest, we’ve seen it since the PS4/XO launch, with titles likes Need for Speed Rivals. There was barely any difference between the two visuals-wise and the next-gen version of the game felt like it was held back by having to maintain values with its chugging twin. But one of them was £10-£20 more expensive. At least you can get it cheaper nowadays.

I’m a console gamer and Valve are killing my Steam Machine dream
Earlier today we were given some extra details on over a dozen new Steam machines, including prices for the base models from multiple manufacturers. Many things remain unclear, but the consensus amongst the PC-savvy crowd seems to still be that they could build their own equivalent gaming rig for considerably less. This is hardly earth-shattering news though.
Steam Machines are all about the convenience for the non-savvy consumer looking for a way into PC gaming, namely people who own a PC or laptop solely for work or console gamers. People like me. I know this, you know this. So why doesn’t Valve?

Celebrate 15 Years of PlayStation 2 with its 15 Greatest Games
15 years. That’s how long the PlayStation 2, the most successful console ever made, has been around. The PS2 wasn’t just important for games, Sony were massively influential in making DVD the film format of choice by slyly slipping a DVD player into millions of homes too, much like they’ve did again with Blu-ray and the PS3. The games are what mattered though. Here’s our list of the Top 15 titles we felt were amongst the most important. Of course, some tough choices had to be made, but that’s how strong 15 years of PS2 really was. PS3 and Xbox 360 didn’t get close to those numbers, but with the PS4 already at 20 million, maybe Sony fancy their chances. Here we go then, in order of release year…

Sony no longer guaranteeing DriveClub PS+ Edition, but you shouldn’t care
In a recent Metro interview with Sony Europe President/CEO Jim Ryan, he was unable to guarantee that the PS Plus version of DriveClub will ever be released.
Metro: And… is there still going to be the free PlayStation Plus version?
Jim Ryan: That’s still being looked at.
Metro: You can’t guarantee that it will ever happen?
Jim Ryan: I can’t say anything at this stage.
Well, that doesn’t sound good does it? DriveClub was originally planned to be a launch game for the PS4, but was delayed numerous times before its eventual release last year. The game was also originally supposed to be released for free on PS Plus, but as time went by, it emerged that the PS Plus version would be a slimmed down version of the game featuring only the India-based tracks.

The Order: 1886 Survival Tips Guide
If you’re finding that your thumbs are going to sleep during all those cutscenes in The Order: 1886, you’ll want to check out our Survival Tips to make life that little bit easier for Galahad in his fight against rebel scum, lycans and whatever else those filthy (but oh so pretty) streets of London throw at him.
The Order: 1886 – forget about length, the lack of gameplay is the problem
Many gamers have been quick to bash or defend The Order: 1886’s short length. Yes, five or six hours for a game doesn’t necessarily mean it’s too short. Vanquish is a similar length and is insane amounts of fun from start to finish.
The thing is, for the Order’s, let’s say six hours, you only actually ‘play’ it for around half of that time. The rest of the game involves a lot of cutscenes or an abundance of what I’ll call ‘walking cutscenes.’
