Assassin’s Creed IV Trailer Shows Infamous Characters

“Dash my buttons!”

Thanks Steve Bonnet  -the latest shipmate of the good ship, Jackdaw- for my new favourite phrase. The jovial Brit is introduced as a rich thrill-seeker who we imagine is going to get more than he bargained for. Especially when he finds himself in a world packed with infamous pirates like Charles Vane and Blackbeard.

This latest trailer is more of a visual showcase of the game’s characters, so don’t expect much gameplay. Do expect some top-notch next-gen visuals though. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was one of the best-looking next-gen games I saw at this week’s  Eurogamer Expo. Hell, it was one of the best games I played there full stop.

So how about it readers? Did you head down to Earl’s Court to play some pirates? And have you made up which generation you’re going to opt for when the game is released? Continue reading Assassin’s Creed IV Trailer Shows Infamous Characters

The Sunday Seven: Reasons to be Excited about PS Vita TV

Earlier this week, Sony took to the stage at the Tokyo Game Show to announce the excellent-looking PS Vita TV micro-console, which will be released in Japan later this year. Sony haven’t announced anything about a Western release beyond “stay tuned”, but considering the high interest the device has received from this half of the world, we’re expecting to get our hands on it early next year at the latest. We can’t complain really, especially as Japan is getting the Vita TV device instead of the PS4 this year. I bet they’re furious deep down, but in a really polite way.

So, is Vita TV really just a consolation prize for gamers in Sony’s homeland? Far from it, in fact, I really want one. Is that because I’ve been told I can’t? Very possibly, but here are another seven reasons why I’m crossing everything in the hope we’ll soon be plugging the little white box into a nearby TV.

New Shadow Warrior Gameplay Trailer

Want an old-school shooter, but one that doesn’t feel like it’s stuck in the past? Quiet, Painkiller HD, nobody wants to play you. You really need to check out the new gameplay trailer for the reboot of Shadow Warrior. There’s a gory mess of first-person sword attacks and bloody massive rocket launchers against all sorts of opponents.

Plus, the protagonist is called Wang. Any trailer that open with “you’ve got Wang” when answering the phone has our attention. Childish? Most certainly. A much needed dose of silliness in a genre obsessed by realism? You bet. Enjoy the weird after the break. Continue reading New Shadow Warrior Gameplay Trailer

Knack Gets A Gamescom Trailer

Sony’s upcoming action platformer is looking pretty sweet so far. With Mark Cerny, the lead architect on the PS4, working on the game, we’re sure he’s going to try and get something special from the new console. Not to mention he has a rich platforming history including the best of the best: Sonic 2, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter. The guy knows his stuff.

Knack features a transforming hero that builds himself up by destroying objects, but he can become smaller to sneak through tighter areas too, which should break up all the goblin smacking. We’ve got high hopes for this one, especiallyseeing as it’s the only platformer in Sony’s launch lineup. Continue reading Knack Gets A Gamescom Trailer

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture Set to be Casual, But Immersive

Fancy something mildly disturbing? Ever wondered what it would be like if Lost and Silent Hill collided? Then you’ll be wanting to take a look at The Chinese Room’s new game coming exclusively to PS4, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. The ‘post-event’ vibe in the trailer feels like there’s some sort of menace just around the corner. What is ‘the loop’ that somebody was trying to close on the computer? These are questions raised by the brief trailer and we’re sure you want to know more too.

The developers of the critically acclaimed Dear Esther have been talking about the game and how they approached Sony. Dan and Jessica, co-directors at The Chinese Room had this to say:

“It’s all about the end of the world. You play the role of a scientist, trapped in the very second of the apocalypse, and the game is about discovering what has happened. You do this by exploring a large open-world environment, and interacting with the objects, places and people you find to gradually unlock and put together the story.” Continue reading Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture Set to be Casual, But Immersive

Rime Devs: Sony Respect the Crazy and Beautiful

There was a fantastic range of indie games announced for the PS4 during yesterday’s Sony Gamescom presser, but Rime has scrambled to the top of the pile for this Ico fan.

Coming from Spanish outfit Tequila Works, this gorgeous game blends the colourful art-style of Zelda: The Wind Waker with the atmospheric, lonely cliff-side castle ruins seen in Ico. Little else is known about the game at this stage, but we’d strongly advise you check out the trailer below if you haven’t seen it already. Infamous Devs Show off DualShock 4 Controller

Hot on the heals of yesterday’s reveal trailer for new character, Fetch, we have another Infamous: Second Son video for you. This dev diary is an essential watch for any PlayStation fan wanting to see the DualShock 4’s trackpad in use. The player can use it to make Delsin scan his finger at checkpoints, follow prompts for hacks or even for stealth attacks as he seemingly melts a guard’s neck with his fiery hands.

The rest of the video displays Sucker Punch’s enthusiasm for the new controller and even how they were invited to Japan to give feedback on early prototypes. Matt and Carl will be getting their own hands on the controller all this week, keep an eye out for their PS4 previews for their impressions. Battlefield 4 Gets Two New Gamescom Trailers

Wow, even on the lower settings on YouTube, this game looks amazing. We’ve scavenged two trailers from EA’s Gamescom presser for you. The first is the Paracel Storm multiplayer trailer which looks like the ultimate in modern updates to the Pacific Island battles of Battlefield 1943.

The second video shows off the game’s varied ‘Levolution’ concepts, destroying the environment to your advantage, or just because it looks so damn cool. The competition for the years hottest FPS just got a lot tougher for Activision’s Ghosts. Continue reading Battlefield 4 Gets Two New Gamescom Trailers

12 Minutes of Dying Light Gameplay

We’ve been dying (sorry) to see Dying Light in action since its initial E3 reveal and Techland have finally unleashed some gameplay footage. This survival action game takes the Dead Island template and adds in some slick parkour moves to spice up the action.

It’s about time developers started to take some influence from the criminally under-appreciated Mirror’s Edge and we have our fingers crossed this will be more fun to play than Brink. Gameplay here looks to be very open, with tough choices needing to be made on the fly, as shown when discovering a lone survivor on the way to a supply drop.

You’ll also get a brief look at how much of a bad idea it is to be caught outside after dark in Dying Light. We’ll presume the almost instant transition to night-time was sped up a little for display purposes in this mission, but it would appear direct combat is a big no no at night. The zombies appear to go through some sort of transformation, becoming faster, stronger and more agile requiring intense sneaking around or terrifying sprints when discovered. Consider this one back on our radars. Enjoy the video after the break. Continue reading 12 Minutes of Dying Light Gameplay

Conversations with Creators – Infamous: Second Son

In the latest of Sony’s Conversations with Creators series for upcoming PS4 projects, we get to hear the thoughts from some of the Sucker Punch team as they work on Infamous: Second Son.

There’s a quite a bit of waffle in there if I’m honest, but they caught my attention by talking about an immersive use of the new controller’s touchpad that does sound like a cool inclusion instead of a regular button press.

Second Son is going to be set in the new location of Seattle, a few years after the last game and with new characters, meaning it’ll be very newbie friendly story-wise. With everyone’s new favourite go-to voice actor Troy Baker (Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us) in the lead role, we’re expecting a character with a bit more personality than Cole in the PS3 games. Thankfully, Sony have opted to release the game in 2014, rather than let it get lost amongst the wave of launch titles around Christmas. Take a peak at the video after the break. Killzone: Shadow Fall Extended Forest Gameplay Video

If you watched Sony’s E3 press conference and were left wanting more after that brief new trailer, then wrap your eyes around this. This new video from IGN shows live gameplay from a forest outside of the walls of the city shown in the original Shadow Fall reveal. Arjan Bak, the game’s Environment Art Director, gives us a commentary throughout, discussing the weapons and the OWL bot that can be used to assist you by distracting the Helghast and hacking computers to cut off enemy reinforcements.

Don’t forget to whack up the YouTube setting to HD for maximum effect. Killzone is not for SD. Fingers crossed Sony’s shooter will be at Gamescom this year as we really want  to touch it and whisper things about Halo meaning nothing to us in its ear. No, just me? Ahem, video after the break. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Coming to PS4

Fans of graphically superior versions of games, rejoice! PC gamers won’t be the only ones getting the prettiest version of Square Enix’s upcoming MMO. Last night, Sony announced that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be coming to the PS4 as well as the PS3 and PC.

This comes as good news but hardly surprising as Square Enix will be keen to keep the game running on modern hardware to keep those paid subscriptions going. With the original release crashing and burning in spectacular fashion, we’re surprised they haven’t shifted to a free-to-play model, which has done wonders for both numbers and revenue for the  likes of DC Universe Online and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Underwater Stage and Riley the COD Dog Gameplay Debuted for Call of Duty: Ghosts

The live gameplay reveal for Call of Duty: Ghosts has just been shown giving gamers an early look at what the press are going to see at E3 in a few days’ time.

The demo begins with an underwater section that resembles many of the stealthy follow missions in previous Call of Duty games. You follow your AI partner around some highly detailed reefs, populated by schools of fish and apparently not-that-hungry sharks. The demo was running on ‘next-gen hardware’ but some of the finer detail was lost due to the live stream nature of the feed. We’re sure a shiny HD version of the demo will emerge over the next few days though.

After another bit of stage chatter, we finally get to see the COD Dog in action, or should I say, Riley. Infinity Ward have named the canine after his namesake in a few previous Call of Duty titles. I know, I thought  they were going to go for Price too when they mentioned pleasing fans.

Riley looks awesome though, and we’ll be able to directly control him. This is reasoned-out by him having a pop-up camera mounted on his back and vibrating sensors behind each ear telling him which direction to move in. The German shepherd can be sent to silently dispatch lone targets. Well, silent apart from their terrified screams.

Commands can also be issued, but this may be something the AI takes care of. Upon cracking the glass in a window, the AI partner simply says ‘search’ and Riley smashes through, alarming a group of guards inside before the door suddenly explodes in slow-motion with one enemy soldier flailing to stop Riley eating his face and the others barely even noticing your presence in what appears to be Ghost’s version of a ‘breach’ assault.

The demonstration closes with an impression of the E3 arena’s 120-foot screen showing a montage. Sadly, this looks very thin on your laptop or TV as they try to cram in the whole image.

Just in case you missed the presentation on your Machinima App on your Xbox 360 because it crashed (well worth £30 a year, Microsoft), here’s a link to the replay on the Call of Duty site. Just skip the 30-minute countdown to get to the presentation. We’ll bring you a YouTube link as soon as possible.

It may only be a glimpse, but we’re looking forward to the November 5th release date already.

Sony: PS4 Games Won’t Be More Expensive

Good news gamers, PS4 games won’t be more expensive than what we’re paying for now. Speaking with CNBC, SCEA President and CEO, Jack Tretton, said that games for the PlayStation 4 would be priced from $0.99 up to $60, the same price as PS3 games in the US.

“I think people are willing to pay if they see value there and I think there’s more choice than ever before for consumers. We’re going to welcome free-to-play models; games from 99 cents up to those $60 games,” said Tretton. Continue reading Sony: PS4 Games Won’t Be More Expensive

Killzone: Shadow Fall Announcement Trailer

You may have already seen the footage from the PS4 reveal this week, if not, you can get up to date here. The previous footage showed what we’re presuming is a chunk of gameplay, more than likely the game’s opening stage. This recut trailer features a voice over that gives us some insight into the attack. It would appear the Helghast people are a bit pissed about the ISA’s revenge attack on their planet and have returned to Vekta for another shot at domination. To be fair, Helghan, you started it.
