EA Announce Need For Speed: The Run

Popular online retailers ShopTo.net have leaked a trailer for EA’s new racer, Need for Speed: The Run. Realising it would be hard work denying the project with a EA-stamped trailer zinging around the internet, EA were quick to confirm the game’s existence. We’ve even got a release date of November 18th.

The trailer shows that we might be in for a more story-driven experience than the recent NFS titles like Shift 2 and Hot Pursuit. All we know is that your driver is called Jack and he looks like he’s about to come to a messy end, thanks to the train that’s speeding towards his overturned car. If the story involves gaining the trust of an underground racing team as a cop or someone looking for an estranged relative, EA should get re-writing that now. Binary Domain | First Gameplay Trailer

After revealing the game with a cinematic trailer last December, Sega have finally given us a look at actual gameplay footage for Binary Domain. Now that we’ve seen the game in action, we have to say we’re much more interested. Well, as interested as we can be considering the game won’t be here until 2012 and it’s not called Bioshock 2.

This sci-fi third-person shooter favours a more sedate (no rocket-assisted power-sliding to cover) angle than last year’s 9/10 scoring Vanquish. It shares the all-grey look though. The cover-based shooter looks to be supported by vehicle sections and hopefully some co-op action as you look to be a part of a four-strong squad.

So what will we be blasting to bits come 2012? Cyborg robots, naturally. Red-eyed, self-aware robots. Initially created for service, a sinister corporation gave them a few firmware upgrades including ego and emotion so they could be slyly integrated into powerful positions within society. We’re presuming that bit them on the arse pretty sharpish. Android drones will be supported by larger mechs and if Sega know what’s good for them, some really, really big ones. Hint: just make Vanquish 2 please.

UPDATE: PlayStation Network Worldwide Crash

The PSN is out of action once again, with the Sony tech team working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Usually, when Sony have had scheduled maintenance to do, they have been quite specific with communicating the downtime. This is not a scheduled session though which means there’s no clear time-frame as to when we can expect to get back online. Worryingly, this is affecting the servers worldwide.

So what problems will this cause you? You can’t sign-in to the PSN (you’ll be greeted with the error code: 80710A06), so you can’t get access to the PSN Store or the Qriocity service. More importantly, you can’t play any games online, particularly annoying if you’re in the middle of reviewing SOCOM: Special Forces. If you have any pending downloads they will at least carry on downloading, handy if you’re trying to download that 870MB Battlefield 3 video.

Microbot (Trailer)

EA have announced a new retro-style shooter for PSN and XBLA. You’ll be controlling a tiny ship about the size of a blood cell, inside the human body. The MicroBot’s purpose is to eradicate diseases at a cellular level by shooting the hell out of them. Drop in/drop out co-op will also be included. We’re even more excited because it reminds us of one of our favourite 80s movies, Inner Space, which in turn went on to inspire episodes of Family Guy and Futurama.  You’ll have to wait until winter 2011 to get your hands on it, but check out the latter part of this trailer to catch a glimpse of the gameplay and strangely calming graphics. Gamescom 2010: EA News Round-up

Here’s our first coverage from Gamescom, Germany. We’re kicking off proceedings with a look at the announcements from EA’s press conference.

PS3 owners have the best news of the lot from EA at this year’s Gamecom event as Mass Effect 2 is coming to PS3 in January 2011. It will be packed with a few extra hours’ worth of gameplay nibbles as well. No mention of the first Mass Effect coming over too, but that’s what YouTube’s for right? Gamescom News: EA Round-Up

Here’s our first coverage from Gamescom, Germany. We’re kicking off proceedings with a look at the announcements from EA’s press conference.

Bioware haven’t just been casually porting over classic 360 games to the PS3, as Dragon Age 2 has been given a release date of 11th March in Europe.

Dead Space 2 now has an official European release date nailed into our schedules, January 28th. Our very own Jon and Matt will no doubt be getting their hands on the game very soon, so keep an eye out for that coverage.

The Sims Medieval marks a change of scenery and time setting for the series. Currently only planned for the PC, gamers will face a more narrative-driven story arc than the usual get a job, get a house, get a girlfriend, then die (I’m a massive fan honest). The new setting tones down the plastic colours for something a bit more like Dragon Age. For fans it might just be the well-deserved change of scenery they deserve after years of the same. For everyone else, they’ve already skipped this paragraph. 360, PS3 and Wii gamers can look forward to The Sims 3 though on October 26th.

David Beckham was announced as an ambassador for EA Active 2. He wasn’t actually there, but we’re assured he approves. The healthy exercise game will come with a heart monitor to alert you to that vital moment as you pass out, into your new TV.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is getting the Special Edition treatment. Pre-order the game and you’ll get two exclusive cars, the Alfa Romeo 8C and the Ford Shelby GT500 (hmmm shiny). EA also pointed out the auto log system that keeps track of your friend’s times and online progress. To EA it’s new, to us it sounds a lot like features we’ve seen in previous EA titles like Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed: Shift.

FIFA 11 will finally allow full control over goalkeepers. It’s the sort of thing we’ve been asking for for ages, but will never actually use. The goalie will be available in all modes including Be a Pro and online matches. All credit to EA for reaching the goal of 11 Vs 11 online matches. Bagsey not being in nets!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be getting Kinect support. Not massively exciting, but it is one of the few existing IPs to take up the challenge of the new motion controller. The Weasley twins from the films demonstrated the game, with quite a lot of lag on show. Hopefully that’ll be sorted in the next few months before release.

That’s all the news announcements from EA’s stage show then. Nothing to show for Battlefield: Modern Combat 3 or Mirror’s Edge 2 then which is a shame, but we’ll keep the faith. Still, Mass Effect 2 for PS3, Kinect for Harry Potter! Everyone goes home happy, yes?

Keep tuned to Dealspwn for more from Gamescom soon.

E3 2010: PlayStation Press Conference

The world’s biggest game show continues in LA with E3. It’s Sony’s turn to take to the stage and stake their claim for bragging rights for the next year of releases. 3D gaming is gets a real push and like Microsoft, motion control is going to be play a big part in the show. But will they be ignoring gamers in favour of the casual market too? We’ll tell you below while also looking at some proper games. Continue reading E3 2010: PlayStation Press Conference

E3 2010: Microsoft Press Conference

Microsoft managed to pack 90 minutes with some tasty looking games and the newly named Kinect motion control camera. The slimline 360 makes a late appearance too. Here’s the No Sleep Gamer summary of what looked good and a bit of what didn’t. Continue reading E3 2010: Microsoft Press Conference

PSN Roundup Part II

It’s all about the Spring Sale this week as Matt explained in the first part of this week’s Roundup. The obvious PSP deals to go for there would be the excellent God of War: Chains of Olympus which is a prequel to the first PS2 game. Go on; go through all four games in a long, blood-soaked weekend. The three GTA reductions are pretty good looking too. The rest of them can be found cheaper on UMD though to be honest, not necessarily second hand either.

There are some permanent reductions too. There’s only one PSN game in there, Inferno Pool which might be worth a gamble at the price. The PSP title reductions are typically a waste of time for anyone happy to buy UMDs still. Continue reading PSN Roundup Part II

Testing the PSN VideoStore on PS3

Ok, so the new Video Delivery Service has been online in the UK for a couple of weeks now and the collection of titles is fattening up nicely so it’s about time we got stuck in.

First up I tested an SD version of Escape from LA (101 mins) starring Kurt Russell. The file size was 1570MB and my ‘20 Mbps’ broadband was running at its typically poor Friday night rate of around 10 Mbps. Wanting to test how good the film would play while it was downloading, I gave it a few minutes head-start, during which time it got up to 5%. Continue reading Testing the PSN VideoStore on PS3

PSN Video Delivery Store Launches in the UK: An In-depth Look

Well, it took more than a while but UK PS3 owners can now rent and buy films over the PlayStation Store by downloading them straight to their hard-drives.

The new part of the store launched at a Soho London party this week with a live performance from Little Boots and a set from radio 1 DJ Annie Mac in what essentially felt like Continue reading PSN Video Delivery Store Launches in the UK: An In-depth Look
