PS4 Creator Wants to Bring Mobile Gamers to Consoles

Lead architect of the PlayStation 4 Mark Cerny, has been chatting about bridging the gap between the billions of people playing games on mobile devices and those playing on consoles. In an interview with MCV he said:

“I look at the world and I see two billion people enjoying games on a smartphone, and then a few hundred thousand on a console. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could bring that larger audience into consoles?”

As well as designing the PS4, Cerny has also been at the helm of one of the upcoming launch titles, Knack. Understandably, he’s keen to emphasise how his own game could be a great “on-ramp” to people coming onto consoles from mobile gaming:

“There is a skill gap between light or beginner players versus those who play triple-A console games. I want to build an on-ramp that looks like a ‘console game.’ Knack is a story driven adventure. It has gameplay which, when you turn it up to hard, satisfies hardcore gamers. but at the same time on easy it can be enjoyed by my eight-year-old nephew who doesn’t play console games.”

Hopefully the plans to satisfy the hardcore don’t just mean giving players less health and more health to Knack’s enemies, which is usually the case between difficulty settings on well, every game ever. Admittedly, Cerny has a strong history of helping to create mega-franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and the first Uncharted game, so he definitely has form and industry clout. But will Knack be able to get people more used to basic touchscreen interfaces to make the transition through the intimidating prospect of a DualShock 4 control pad?

Matt got his hands on Knack a few weeks ago, head on over and have a read of his experience here.
